THE PHILIPPINES, JANUARY 2012: No to Mining in Palawan released a three-part print ad campaign in the local broadsheets, showing a dugong, a pilandok (mouse deer), and a pangolin, all “wounded” by sink holes and eroding soil. In the Philippines, these three endangered species could be found only in Palawan.
Entitled “Wounds”, the print campaign created by DM9JaymeSyfu reinforce the organization’s message of the destructive effects of mining to the local species and ecosystem of Palawan, which officials and environmentalists say is very, very delicate – the narrow stretch of the island coupled with the thin topsoil means that if the forests are destroyed and the land is excavated, all tailings end up in the sea, affecting marine biodiversity. There are 17 key biodiversity sites, two world heritage sites, and eight protected sites in Palawan.
Save the Palawan Movement and the No to Mining in Palawan signature campaign are led by Lopez, Palawan Mayor Edward Hagedorn, Fr. Robert Reyes, Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment’s Clemente Bautista, Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation’s Atty. Jose Andres Canivel, and Rhodora Angela Ferrer, executive director of the Catholica Educational Association of the Philippines.
The signature campaign is backed by the Save Palawan Movement, which is spearheaded by Gina Lopez, ABS-CBN Foundation’s managing director. Lopez, who revealed that she had had a telephone conversation with Ortega minutes before the radio broadcaster was slain, wrote an open letter, calling for support and help in promoting the signature campaign.
Dr. Gerardo “Doc Gerry” Ortega, a staunch opposition to mining activities in his native province of Palawan, was shot dead in a Puerto Princesa public market on January 29, 2011. Almost a year after the death of the civic leader, radio broadcaster, and environmentalist, his crusade continues to live on.
The project “No to Mining in Palawan” kicked off February 3 last year, with the goal of collecting 10 million signatures from advocates and supporters, as they campaign for the stoppage of all mining activities in the province and the protection of its natural resources. As of late, the campaign has generated over 4 million signatures, and the numbers grow steadily by the day.
